Banyak pelajar Bahasa Inggris (termasuk yang sudah cukup lancar) masih sering salah dalam memilih atau menggunakan kata tertentu. Kesalahan ini bisa bikin arti kalimat berubah, atau terdengar aneh bagi penutur asli.

1. Advice vs Advise
- ❌ I need an advise.
- ✅ I need some advice. (noun)
- ✅ Please advise me. (verb)
2. Then vs Than
- ❌ She is taller then me.
- ✅ She is taller than me. (untuk perbandingan)
3. Lose vs Loose
- ❌ I will loose my phone.
- ✅ I will lose my phone. (kehilangan)
- ✅ This shirt is loose. (longgar)
4. Their vs There vs They’re
- ❌ Their going to the office.
- ✅ They’re going to the office.
- ✅ Their office is big.
- ✅ Let’s go over there.
5. It’s vs Its
- ❌ The dog lost it’s bone.
- ✅ The dog lost its bone. (possessive)
- ✅ It’s raining. (it is)
6. Your vs You’re
- ❌ Your welcome.
- ✅ You’re welcome. (You are)
- ✅ Your book is on the table.
7. Affect vs Effect
- ❌ The medicine had a good affect.
- ✅ The medicine had a good effect. (noun)
- ✅ The weather affects my mood. (verb)
8. Much vs Many
- ❌ How much friends do you have?
- ✅ How many friends do you have?
9. Few vs A few
- ❌ I have few friends, I’m happy.
- ✅ I have a few friends, I’m happy.
(“Few” = hampir tidak ada, sedih. “A few” = ada beberapa, cukup.)
10. Borrow vs Lend
- ❌ Can you borrow me your pen?
- ✅ Can you lend me your pen?
- ✅ Can I borrow your pen?
11. Too vs To
- ❌ I want too go.
- ✅ I want to go.
- ✅ It’s too hot today.
12. Beside vs Besides
- ❌ I sit besides him.
- ✅ I sit beside him. (di samping)
- ✅ Besides, I’m tired. (selain itu)
13. Say vs Tell
- ❌ He said me the truth.
- ✅ He told me the truth.
- ✅ He said that he was tired.
14. Bring vs Take
- ❌ Please bring this to your home.
- ✅ Please take this to your home.
(“Bring” = ke sini, “Take” = ke sana)
15. Who vs Whom
- ✅ Who is calling me? (subject)
- ✅ To whom did you give the book? (object)
(Tapi jangan khawatir sobat, “whom” sering tidak digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari.)
16. Fun vs Funny
- ❌ That movie is so fun.
- ✅ That movie is so funny. (lucu)
- ✅ The party was fun. (menyenangkan)
17. Me vs I
- ❌ Me and my friend went to the mall.
- ✅ My friend and I went to the mall.
18. Say vs Speak
- ✅ You can speak English.
- ✅ She said hello.
(“Speak” untuk kemampuan, “say” untuk ucapan langsung)
19. Overhear vs Hear
- ✅ I heard a noise last night.
- ✅ I overheard them talking (tanpa sengaja)
20. Each vs Every
- ✅ Each student has a book.
- ✅ Every student must attend class.
(“Each” = satu per satu, “Every” = semua secara umum)
🎯 Tips Agar Tidak Salah Lagi
- Baca contoh kalimat dan ulangi secara lisan
- Buat daftar pribadimu berisi kata-kata yang sering kamu salah gunakan
- Gunakan satu kata per hari dalam percakapan atau tulisanmu
- Kalau ragu, cek konteks: kata itu berfungsi sebagai kata benda, kata kerja, atau kata sifat?
